Party in the park
|
by RJ
|
The Folk Rock Band played at Handsworth Park, complete with domino schools and the general hub bub making it a jolly but noisy place for cricket. For a few overs the home side score of 224 looked as if it might not be enough, however in the end SMMC 1st XI settled for a losing draw, yielding a not insignificant 10 point haul (equivalent to 2 and a half rain abandoned matches).
At home, the 2nd XI romped home to a 6 wicket win against number 2 in the table Bablake.

Win Win for the 1st XI
|
by RJ
|
The 1st XI often perform better batting first but this week end they did the double, chasing. Despite some superb bowling from Viz (7-62) and Ronny (3-61), Camp Hill's 135 looked pretty good when SMCC were 14-3. But Warren Millard steadied the ship and on form Ronny made it all look easy, ably assisted by Will. On Sunday Bournville posted 198 - but it was not quite enough and Jack and Martin saw SMCC home with 8 balls to spare.
On Saturday the 2nd XI got the better of Moseley Ashfield with a winning draw.
Restricted availability due to holidays and other commitments saw the Saturday 3rd XI and Sunday 2nd XI without some of their regular players, both games resulting in SMCC coming second.
The weather this weekend was excellent - next week the forecast is not so good.

All three matches played - season back in action
|
by RJ

Congratulations to the Groundsman Ron and Chairman Pat for stirling work in making Foliot Fields fit for the first Saturday Home game to be played since 9th June - and the 1st XI reciprocated with a 24 point win over Southam. There was more good news away from the 2nd XI who stole a winning draw - by one run - against Bedworth. The 3rd XI held on for a losing draw v Walmley.

24 points for the Saturday 1st XI
|
by RJ
|
In a nail biting finish, the match v Rowland United resulted in a win by 1 run for the 1st XI. The bets were not on this result, following an SMMC innings where the toss was lost and wickets were also lost to 3 LBW decisions. At 76 for 8 after 29 overs a single batting point looked unlikely, and lasting the 50 overs was a remote possibility. However, Adam Coppell, Jim Shirley and Viz Parmar held on with determination and posted 128 as the target from 49.1 overs. In reply, Rowland looked the favourites, with 50 of the needed runs on the board by the 20th over for no loss. Wickets then began to fall, and the target started to look just beyond Rowland's reach. A 6 from number 10 Lewes in the 48th over looked like a match turning strike, however in the final over, the last but one ball bowled resulted in a fine catch by Jack and left Rowland 1 short of the total - SMCC captured an elusive (this season) 24 points.

Even more soggy
|
by RJ
|
Foliot fields enjoyed a few moments of being almost playable during Thursday, however this was followed by more torrential rain on Friday meaning that no fixtures could be completed at home.
Away, the 3rd XI continued a winning streak with an easy win over Studley. The 1st XI's season horribilius continues with a defeat by Wishaw - we need some positive honking chaps (and some fine weather).

Soggy
|
by RJ
|
The Saturday 2nd XI fixture could not be played at the home ground this week due to the unsafe condition of the outfield.
The fine weather over the following 24 hours rendered the ground just about playable for the Sunday 2nd XI. In a somewhat unusual quirk to the home ground fortunes, the heavy showers in the afternoon finished off the 1st XI match away at Knowle Village. However, the 2nd XI game had progressed sufficiently into the 2nd innings to allow 20 overs play before the rain once again descended - resulting in a winning draw for SMCC.

A Flock of Seagulls
|
by RJ
|
Foliot wet lands was the playground for a large flock of seagulls at midday today, and guess what it was raining. 5 out of 10 1st XI games have now been abandoned due to the unseasonal weather - and 3 of the others were rain affected.
The 2nd XI match also fell victim to the weather, it will be interesting to see whether any teams manage to scrape together a result today, although somebody ususally does.
Next week is the final match of the first half of the season, we've hardly played at all. The weather forecast for the first half of next week is that the heavy rain will continue.

In the only match played by SMCC teams this weekend, the Sunday 1st XI dominated the game v Corley to win by 10 wickets. Good batting by Adam Coppell supported by Tom Hemming overran the Corley total of 108 all out - with a fifer for skipper Viz Parmar.

Monsoon Season
|
by RJ
|
Marston Green did well to enable the 1st XI fixture to at least start, however after 27 overs torrential rain was the only winner.
Ronny and Justin had made a determined start against some rapid, if erratic bowling from Baker. After the rain storm the umpire declared the ground unfit for further play so we joined the 2nd and 3rd XI and had the rest of the afternoon off.
The 2nd XI home game v Pickwick has already been cancelled for today - no news yet about the 1st XI away game v Corley.

Centenary Celebrations
|
by KH
|
The events started on Wednesday, 26th July, when a select band of 'old' players contested a 20 over match against a mixed SMCC XI. The current players batted first on a very warm evening and amassed a score of 140. This was just a shade too much for the guests; so players, spectators, and officials availed themselves of the awaiting refreshments as darkness descended.
Thursday, 27th July was a gloriously warm day on which to welcome the MCCC representative side. The cricket was played in good spirit and was a joy to watch. MCCC ran out winners with the home side falling just short of the target in the final over of the day. A big thanks to all who turned out for the MCCC side and to Jim Hartley and Neil Garland for their umpiring services. The day was rounded off by a superb buffet and just a few drinks at the bar.
Friday evening saw a mixed SMCC side line up against a 'Social' team that was sporting 3 ladies! An entertaining evening ensued with Marie, Holly, and Vicky all getting runs. Again the evening was rounded off with a barbecue, baked potatoes, and a finger buffet.
Monday, 24th July saw the last of the scheduled events take place on yet another gloriously warm, dry day. Solihull Muncipal were the guests for an U11s pairs match. The visitors won comfortably, but the match was played in good spirit in front of a large group of spectators from both sides. Thanks to Solihull Municipal for supporting our celebrations. Following the U11s game was a pairs competition for the U13 & U15 age groups. After some excellent cricket, Dominic (U13) and Mobeen (U15) ran out the winners and were presented with their trophies by John Green. Thanks to John for sponsoring the event.
A big thanks to all who contributed to the events - without all you volunteers we could not have made the celebrations as successful and enjoyable. See you in 2106?

The Weather v SMCC
|
by KH
|
The weather was a strong opponent for SMCC cricket teams this bank holiday week end. On Saturday all three matches were abandoned with no play. After a sunny Sunday when there were no fixtures in the Arden Sunday league, the rain returned for the Monday WCL matches and the 2nd XI travelled to Rugby where SMCC have a long standing tradition of travel, lots of rain and no play. However the storm clouds were kind and in the main passed over the Rugby ground and the 2nd XI stormed to a 24 point win.
At Foliot Fields, the already wet outfield looked a bit dodgy but both the home and Stockton away teams were keen to play, and the umpires well supportive of keeping the fixture on. Read the match report for the full story, but after a roller coaster ride in a rain reduced match, SMCC got the better of the points with a winning draw. At last the cricket season has started!

The Seniors do it again!
|
by KH
|
Skippered by Danny Marshall, the Seniors posted 206 runs which was just beyond the Junior's reach. Captain Viz Parmar led the Junior side who looked as if they would reach the target, however the last wicket was lost and they were still 10 runs short.
The weather did not live up to its promise, but it was an excellent game of cricket. Man of the Match Steve Reynolds lifted the Loo seat trophy and the newly created ashes were collected by the winning skipper.
Do not forget the SMCC presentation evening on Friday 11th November.

The classic end of season Junior Senior match has been delayed until next Sunday 18th September due to today's inclement weather.
Hopefully the final week end will see the last Saturday WCL fixture and this traditional interclub showcase match played. All spectators welcome as we finish the season and look forward to our centenary year.
Following the final week end, the end of season work will begin on the SMCC square.

Raindrops keep falling on my head

The 1st XI should be mathematically safe from relegation following today's rain - where it is understood that the Rugby/Bourneville match, as well as both SMCC/Fillongley games, has been abandoned without play.
The question mark now for the 2nd XI is whether the Ansley ground, as has happened before, has escaped the rain enough to make the fixture against Pickwick - or whether all positions remain the same in the bottom half of the league tables.

2nd XI get crucial win over Ansley
|
by KH
|
Set the not impossible target of 249 at SMCC's fine batting wicket, the 2nd XI made an excellent start with a first partnership of 136 runs to Ansel and Alex Reynolds. The remainder of the runs were shared between the next 6 batsmen - Steve Mullard notable for acheiving 1000 runs this season during his vital stand of 27 runs.
The 1st XI, again affected by ongoing injuries, had not one of their better days - see scorecard for details.

Another win for the Saturday 1st XI gave them a points haul of 44 for the week end - enough to go round both Wishaw and Fillongley in the tables.
The 2nd XI winning draw on Saturday and losing draw on Monday gave them a useful 21 points - all to play for now next week against Ansley at home at Foliot Fields.

1st XI grab victory for 24 points
|
by KH
|
You would not have put money on SMCC 1st XI half way through their innings at 42 for 3. However the 2 Jims and Ruggers had more success with Bourneville's indifferent track and the target was set at 144. The Bourneville batting side also found scoring slow, but Waqas at 60 looked ready to cruise home with a number of overs to spare, despite being 7 wickets down. His third lusty 6 however fell short and was taken cleanly by skipper Will. Ears and Pepsi quickly claimed the last 2 wickets and what do you know, another win against a team in the top quarter of the division.
In the reverse fixture at Foliot Fields, the 2nd XI batted out for a losing draw and 7 points.

Sunday - 2nd XI safe - 1st XI awaiting results
|
by KH
|
In the last game for Sheldon Marborough for the Arden Sunday league today both teams, despite being placed above the bottom 2, were mathematically at risk of relegation.
The 2nd XI won the crucial toss and elected to field - proving to be a good decision when Coleshill were all out for 97. The SMCC boys didn't exactly romp home, but with 55 overs available never seriously looked in trouble.
The 1st XI met a strong Coleshill side - mostly the Birmingham League Saturday XI. See scorecard for the details. The fate of the Sunday 1st XI is now dependant on the other results this week end, and maybe next week. With 4 teams in the division still with one game in hand, the final positions in a very close table will go down to the wire.

ASL Update - Tense Fortnight in Store
|
by AM
|
With 2 ASL weekends left (although only 1 for SMCC), both 1st and 2nd teams still have a lot to play for.
With 11 points separating 5 teams, The 1st XI can still finish as runners up in Division 1 with a victory this week, although anything less than a winning draw will mean we need to rely on other results going our way over the last two weekends to be sure of survival.
The 2nd XI situation is much simpler. A losing draw at home to Coleshill will guarantee survival, although as Coleshill scored 340 last week that may not be easy.

Top of the table - WIN
|
by KH
|
The Saturday 1st XI won a nail biting fixture v top of the table Walsall YMF. Who would have put money on SMCC at 78 for 6 in the 15th over chasing 200.
Its a funny game cricket - with an extra 7 overs from YMF in which only 1 good ball could have given YMF 24 points - SMCC bottom order prevailed and won with 22 balls in hand.
Well done the 1st XI!

Saturday 1s Rolled Over at Rugby
|
by WH
|
The up and down season of the Saturday 1st XI continued with a disappointing loss at fellow strugglers Rugby. Despite an excellent first 30 overs in the field, with Rick Singh taking 4-22 and Jack Hemming bowling 18 overs for 36 runs, SMCC came under attack from some big hitting to see Rugby score at around 8 an over for the last 20 and finish 228-6.
This did not represent a massive total on a drying pitch with a good outfield, and despite the early loss of Rob Jordan, Will Hemming and Jim Rasin batted steadily for 20 overs. When Will was bowled off his pads for 43, Jim stepped up a gear and produced some of his best batting of the year in progressing to 47. However, the run out of Jack Hemming for 0 put SMCC under further pressure and when Jim was given out to an indifferent LBW shout there was still plenty to do.
Despite some lusty blows by Martin Weir (35), SMCC lost wickets too regularly and succumbed to finish 42 runs short with 3 overs left. A frustrating result considering the game was for the taking - and not helped by some fairly inconsistent umpiring. That said, there is plenty to do in the batting and bowling departments and with the start of a new month, still lots of cricket to be played.

First win for Saturday 2nd XI
|
by KH
|
A convincing win from the Sat 2nd XI over Camp Hill - achieving the total set by the opposition in less than 40 overs - just 2 wickets down. Opener Naz Ali carried his bat for 83 not out and Ben Tarry and Tuffail Hussain both grabbed 4 wickets each.
At home the 1st XI did not make sufficient runs on their flat pitch and fast outfield, - and despite a promising fielding start that had Camp Hill 50 for 2 off 20 overs, the opposition made the total in the 46th over.
The 3rd XI had a difficult fixture against Moseley Ashfield but still managed to gain 5 points.
See the scorecards for the rest - at 10:30 on Sunday morning the games today look somewhat at risk.
Post script - at 16:00 - no play in either home or away matches - will be surpised if this is not the case across the league.

Improved points grab this Saturday
|
by KH
|
Highlight of the week end was the Saturday 1st XI who won a welcome 24 points v Streetly (OK Rouge?) - well done the team for hanging in there and proving that cricket is a most unpredictable game. At home on Saturday the 2nd XI battled for a losing draw and the 3rd team, gaining an injured Steve Mullard, a welcome winning draw.
In the second game in as many week ends against Pickwick the Sunday 1st XI posted a total that was too much for opposition, however so was the last Pickwick wicket for SMCC. At home the Sunday 2nd XI were set 335 to chase - they settled for an early finish.

How crucial is winning the toss?
|
by KH
|
There was a lot of leather chasing this hot week end for the Saturday and Sunday 1st XI - being inserted to field on both days. Conversely the Saturday and Sunday 2nd XI won their tosses and elected to bat.
The final outcome was what could be seen as a welcome 25 points for the 3rd team - the result of a walkover so an improvised inter club friendly was played. The best of the rest was a losing draw to Pickwick in the Saturday 1st XI.
As always the scorecard tells the story - with some exceptions.

Despite a 2 hour delay - the Saturday home game was played -rain reduced to 32 overs per innings, whereas over at Ansley the notably resilient track allowed a full 100 overs.
Both WCL div 1 games resulted in losing draws for the SMCC Saturday teams - the third XI could not play on the rain sodden Land Rover ground.
Sunday the 1st XI lost their first match this season against Colehill - but the 2nd XI gained a much needed winning draw - to move them further out of the relegation slot and up the table, going round Coleshill.

Sat.1st XI get 24 points v top of the table
|
by KH
|
The Saturday 1st XI won a convincing victory over top of the table Bournville. The opposition won the toss and decided to field - hoping to restrict SMCC to a getable total. Returning from holiday, skipper Will Hemming and fellow opener Martin Weir demonstrated that SMCC have some batting resilience. Both Will and Neil Rughani achieved half centuries and Guy Morris a credible 34. In reply the Bournville side lost early wickets to Martyn Bucknall - and despite an excellent 74 by Urshad, were finally all out 64 runs short of the total.

Saturday 4th June v Bedworth

Bedworth wicket taker Craig McConnachie got the better of the SMCC top order batsmen, but the prospect of no batting points was prevented by a stirling 40 runs not out by Ricki Singh. Unfortunately the rain affected total of 126 never looked good enough, and the on form Bedworth side achieved the runs in the 30th over.
The 2nd XI succeeded in bowling the opposition out for 174 runs but even 5 extra overs was not enough and a losing draw was the final outcome.
The 3rd XI result was a credible losing draw away against Attock.

Positive start for new 1st Team captains
|
by KH

Well done to both Will Hemming and Keith Rondeau, skippers of 1st team matches for the Saturday and Sunday fixtures opening the league season this week end. Some excellent performances and good team spirit saw the Saturday 1st team dominating the game against Streetly to earn 20 points. The Sunday 1st Team, newly promoted to Division 1, gained a winning draw against Bournville. Visit the scorecards for these games to view the many highlights - Jim Shirley's wicket bonanza, Will Hemming's run fest and Neal Rughani's catches - plus many many more. It's early days yet but the weekend has been a good one for the SMCC 1st teams.
Congratulations also to Adrian Maguire and the 3rd team for a fantastic win against Four Oaks Saints - scorecard to appear shortly.
For the Saturday 2nd XI there were centuries for both Steve Mullard and Keith Rondeau in the opening partnership - unfortunately 310 runs were not enough and Streetly reached the target in the final over. The Sunday 2nd's gained a deserved losing draw against a strong Bournville side.

WCL Announcement - any views?
|
by RJ
|
Next season, we are proposing to introduce a limited system of promotion/relegation for 2nd teams. Many clubs will remember all the discussions in the past few years regarding this. Recently, we have shied away from it as we were warned that it might be difficult for fixtures. However, having seen that both the Birmingham & District League and the Staffordshire Club Championship operate independent promotion / relegation for 2nd teams, we think that the following will work.
The league for 2nd teams will be split into two levels – Premier, 1 & 2, then the other divisions not including 4 & 5 East. From next season promotion and relegation will operate on a two up two down system within these levels,
ie a 2nd team can be promoted from Div 2 (2nds) up to Premier (2nds), whilst at the lower level a 2nd team can be promoted only from 4 East to 3 East. If a 1st team is relegated from Division 2, their 2nd team would also have
to be relegated, even if they were in Premier Div (2nds). This avoids the problem of fixture arrangements.
To coincide with this, it may be better to call the 2nd team leagues “reserves” as per the old Coventry League.
Also there will have to be a rule introduced something like the following:-
“If a club is found to have deliberately played, after July 31st, a first team player in its reserve side to help that side attain promotion, it will be penalised 30 points. The onus of proof of either injury or form will be on the offending club”. It is generally felt by the League management Committee that 2nd team cricket needs this lift.
Let me have your club’s views please.

Pickwick Double in Final Weekend
|
by WH
|
Both Saturday teams finished their league campaigns by getting the better of Pickwick. The 1st XI avenged their last-ball defeat at Foliot Fields with a superb 120-run victory. Reversing the batting order gave Tom Hemming (22) and Martyn Bucknall (64) the chance to show their skills as they put on a solid opening stand. Keith Rondeau hit 58 and others chipped in as SMCC reached 230-9. In reply, the opening bowling partnership of Jack Hemming (4-35) and Martin Weir (3-38) knocked over the top of the Pickwick batting, included the feared Butt, caught amazingly by Neal Rughani for just 4. Pickwick finished 110 all out as Steve Mullard conjured a couple of wickets at the end.
The 2nd XI batted first and made steady progress. Skipper Les King made 10 before he was bowled, but Ansel Pottinger then smashed a very rapid 49, a surprise to all when he played on. Will Hemming played a long innings only to find himself run out on 49, backing up too far for a second run. Dave Mullard (42) and Steve Bose (29) saw the side past 200, with Steve being caught off the penultimate ball with the total at 222. In reply, Pickwick batted steadily after the early loss of an opener, and it took Steve Bose to eventually make the breakthrough having Ali stumped for 37. Will Hemming bowled Abid, who showed a fine golf swing in his 32. Despite a spirited 36 from Hussain, Steve Bose's off spin removed the middle order as he finished with 4-41, play abandonded in the dark with 9 overs left and Pickwick on 172-7.
Sunday saw the annual game in memory of David Genge. The 3rd XI beat the Under 17 XI before the rain came down at SMCC.
Next weekend sees a possible fixture against Four Oaks Saints although we await confirmation on this.

Double Win over Ward End
|
by WH
|
SMCC's Saturday XIs both won against local rivals Ward End Unity on Saturday. The 1st XI played away and scored 214-7, thanks largely to Steve Mullard (75) and Guy Morris (72*). In reply, the hosts were reduced to 45-5 as Jim Shirley took four wickets, but fought back to 191 before the final wicket fell to give SMCC 24 points, and guarantee safety in Divison 1, regardless of any other results.
The 2nd XI hosted Ward End with the Foliot Fields pitch looking like a batting paradise. The visitor's decision to field was somewhat surprising, but Will Hemming (33) and Neal Rughani (26) capitalised to put on 56 for the first wicket. Ansel Pottinger continued a good season with a hard-hit 79, whilst Ricky Singh made 50. In reply, Ward End looked as though they would make it through for a draw, but Dave Gibson conjured 5-18 as they ended 192 all out.
Sunday at Foliot Fields saw the annual Senior v Junior fixture. A strong Senior team took a comfortable victory to retain the Frank Orme trophy.

Bank Holiday Blues for 1st XI
|
by WH
|
The SMCC Saturday 1st XI lost two games this weekend after being in strong positions, whilst the 2nd XI and the 3rd XI claimed the better of their opposition.
Travelling to Camp Hill on Saturday, SMCC restricted the hosts to just 125-8 from 50 overs, wickets shared between all bowlers - Nathan Mayling taking 2-4 from 8. In reply, SMCC collapsed to 74 all out, only Martin Weir (20), Jack Hemming (15) and Dan Tyler (11) making double figures.
The Monday fixture against Southam saw SMCC opt to bat, and again struggle to 41-4. A 65 run partnership from Jim Rasin (35) and Dan Tyler (43) restored order somewhat, with good lower order hitting seeing SMCC to 193-8. In reply, Southam also lost early wickets, and at 69-5 the game was wide open. A good partnership between Irving (72*) and Shaw (28) took the momentum away from SMCC and Southam reached the target with 2 overs to spare.
The Saturday 2nd XI hosted Camp Hill and were asked to bat. SMCC made a steady start but found themselves at 77-4 thanks to some good bowling and some indifferent umpiring. Dave Mullard (72*) and Neal Rughani (25) rebuilt and Dave's late hitting saw SMCC to 190-9. In reply, Camp Hill never looked like reaching the target as wickets fell regularly - two each to Matt Read and Arman Singh, three to Ben Tarry as SMCC won by 69 runs.
Travelling to Southam on Monday, SMCC arrived late and were asked to bat. At 149-0 this looked like a good decision, with Will Hemming hitting 120 and Virender Khara a fine 43. Ansel Pottinger weighed in with 50 as SMCC reached 277-6. In reply, the hosts crashed to 39-4 before recovering, and eventually finished 202-8, three wickets each to Sultan Ramzan and Rick Singh.
The Saturday 3rd XI finished their season with a win over Four Oaks Saints. Talhar Masood hit 49 and Steve Reynolds 31 as SMCC reached 178-8. This pair also claimed five wickets between them as Four Oaks were bowled out for 146.
Two weeks to go in the Saturday league season, whilst next Sunday sees the popular Junior vs Senior annual fixture, starting 11am at Foliot Fields.

Sunday XIs clinch trophies
|
by WH
|
Both SMCC Sunday XIs claimed wins to ensure some silverware from the Arden Sunday League. The 1st XI had already won promotion, and claimed the title with an emphatic win at Five Ways Old Eds. The 2nd XI ensured a runners-up spot as both teams will now play in their respective first divisions in 2005.
The Saturday 1st XI hosted Sphinx with several regular players absent. Asked to bat first on a slow Foliot Fields pitch, SMCC made 210-9 thanks to good contributions from the middle order, with Andy Wier (27), Jim Rasin (43), Guy Morris (30) and Dan Tyler (32) all making runs. In reply, Sphinx made a steady start, but 3 wickets from Martyn Bucknall and 4 to Jim Shirley left them struggling at 143-7. Jim Rasin's final over brought two wickets from the first two balls, but the tenth wicket and an extra 8 points remained just out of SMCC's grasp.
The Saturday 2nd XI batted out for a losing draw at Sphinx, after the hosts had hit 207-7. Steve Bose and Sultan Ramzan both took 3 wickets. Ansel Pottinger continued his good season with 41, whilst Les King (21), Virender Khara (27), Arman Singh (25) and Steve Bose (25*) all chipped in.
The Saturday 3rd XI couldn't quite hold out against Blossomfield. Chasing 126, Malcolm Purvis anchored the innings with 31, but only Matt Coppell (11) and Kamil Munir (15) could offer any support as SMCC finished 76 all out with 4 overs remaining.
Needing just two points to secure the 2nd division title, the Sunday 1st XI barely broke sweat in beating Five Ways Old Eds. The hosts batted first and made only 69, four wickets to Rick Singh and three to Roy Westwood. No, that's not a mistake. In reply, Will Hemming (40*) and Alex Reynolds (27*) saw SMCC home in ten overs.
Hosting Four Oaks Saints, the Sunday 2nd XI also elected to chase, and after the visitors set 127 as the target (Steve Mullard 4-33), all the SMCC batsmen chipped in, the highlight being Talhar Masood's 43, whilst skipper Steve Reynolds saw the side home with an unbeaten 26.

Double Fillongley: Better on Sunday
|
by WH
|
Facing Fillongley on both days this weekend, the SMCC 1st and 2nd XIs came off better in their Sunday fixtures. With the final weekend of the Sunday league approaching, this was arguably the more important day for SMCC with respect to league positions.
The Saturday 1st XI consolidated their mid-table position with a losing draw against Fillongley. Batting first, the hosts notched up 243-6 thanks largely to a chancy 95 from number 3 Smith. SMCC rallied well in the face of some big hitting, Tom Hemming finishing with 3 wickets. In reply, Jack Hemming made a swift 19 but losing him and Martin Weir left SMCC struggling. Jim Rasin (67) and Andy Wier (43) rebuilt the innings with plenty of vocal support. As SMCC started the push, falling wickets meant settling for a losing draw.
The Saturday 2nd XI came out second best in their first Fillongley encounter of the weekend. Only the top four reached double figures as SMCC were bowled out for 155 - Ansel Pottinger's 61 top score. In reply, the visitors lost only 3 wickets in reaching the target, Luke Froggatt taking two wickets.
The 3rd XI fought for 45 overs to try and draw their game against Moseley, but ultimately lost their final wicket with the end in sight. Moseley scored 183-7 with Bill Pye claiming a 5 wicket haul. Only Virender Khara with 35 made any real impression for SMCC.
The Sunday 1st XI continued their march towards promotion and the Arden Division 2 title with a rain-affected win over Fillongley. Heavy rain after 20 overs saw Fillongley at 80-2 before play resumed with each side losing 13 overs. With only 12 overs to bat, the Fillongley side pushed hard but lost regular wickets to finish 154-9, 3 wickets apiece to Jims Rasin and Shirley. In reply, Jack Hemming (37) and Jim Rasin (33) made the early running, before Guy Morris (23*) and Rick Singh(34*) saw SMCC to a 7 wicket victory.
The Sunday 2nd XI couldn't quite get the final Fillongley wicket as they claimed a winning draw. Dean Williams' 37 formed the centrepiece of SMCC's 157-6, with Steve Mullard (31) and Steve Reynolds (29) also contributing. Skipper Reynolds completed a good game with 3 wickets, whilst Raj Singh also took 3, Fillongley finishing 136-9.

1st XI go big at Foliot Fields
|
by WH
|
An amazing weekend at Foliot Fields saw not only a 24 point victory for SMCC against league leaders Walsall YPF, but a club record score as the Sunday 1st XI racked up 440-3 from 45 overs against Corley.
On a hot sunny Saturday, the SMCC Saturday 1st XI batted steadily to reach 222-7 from their 50 overs. Martin Weir hit 52 at the top of the innings whilst Andy Wier made 60 at number 3. Guy Morris lead the accleration in the final overs with a hard hit 39. In reply, YPF started well, but lost wickets in groups as Jim Shirley (4-60), Keith Rondeau (3-61) and Tom Hemming (3-46) shared the spoils to give SMCC a 25 run victory.
The Saturday 2nd XI lost out to the YPF 2nd XI at Walsall. SMCC were bowled out for 214, Will Hemming (59) and Rick Singh (30) top scorers, with Extras (50) lending some support. In reply, an early wicket only meant their number 3 had an early chance to play his shots, and some very generous home umpiring allowed him to reach 124 not out as YPF reached the target with 5 wickets lost.
Asked to bat by Nuneaton, the Saturday 3rd XI posted 146-9 with Steve Reynolds (46) and Dan Tyler (40) leading the way. SMCC took 4 wickets but Nuneaton passed the target with over 20 overs to spare.
Anybody at Foliot Fields yesterday was fortunate to witness the Sunday 1st XI amass a massive 440-3 from their 45 overs against a weak Corley team. All five batsmen who got in passed 50 - Martin Weir (75) and Jim Rasin (77) put on 161 in 21 overs for the first wicket. Will Hemming hit 94 from about 40 balls, before Jim Shirley (74*) and Andy Wier (72*) took the total well into the record books. In reply, Corley lasted exactly 20 overs as Viz Parmar (5-41) and Jack Hemming (4-51) formed an unlikely double act to remove them and give SMCC a 348 run victory. [see team picture]
Disappointingly, the SMCC 2nd XI found themselves playing an unusually strong Marston Green team. Coincidentally, Marston Green had cancelled their 1st XI game. SMCC made 166-7 thanks largely to 55 from Steve Mullard. In reply, Marston Green reached the target with 7 overs to spare to severely dent the league-winning hopes of SMCC.

Mixed fortunes continue
|
by WH
|
The Saturday 1st XI batting struggled again as only Guy Morris with 73 made double figures in the top six. This was in reply to hosts Bablake Old Boys' 237-6 from 50 overs - Jim Shirley bowling almost throughout to take 5-100. After having Bablake at 86-5, chasing 238 was representative of SMCC's current luck at Saturday 1st XI level. It was Neal Rughani who partnered Guy in batting SMCC to safety, sharing a stand of 62 in 18 overs as a losing draw and six points was secured.
The Saturday 2nd XI took advantage of a won toss and made full use of a hard pitch at Foliot Fields, posting 311-5 from 45 overs. Will Hemming (87), Ansel Pottinger (52) and Rick Singh (50*) all hit half centuries, whilst Dave Gibson smashed 37. In reply, the visitors looked comfortable until the first breakthrough, and although they matched the required rate, when wickets continued to fall they fell away to 243 all out, Will Hemming completing a good game with 4-17, whilst Arman Singh took two wickets.
The Saturday 3rd XI came second in their fixture with Attock. After being bowled out for 66 they took only one wicket as Attock comfortably reached their target.
With no Sunday fixtures this week we look forward to next Saturday when SMCC face the league leaders in both 1st and 2nd XI, Walsall YPF. The 2nds travel to one of the less popular venues in the league whilst the 1sts host the prolific Amar and his side.

Recurring last over nightmare for Saturday 1sts
|
by WH
|
Another exciting game at Foliot Fields saw a third final-over loss for the Saturday 1st XI. This time it was Grif and Coton who passed SMCC's 208 with two balls and two wickets to spare. Guy Morris earlier hit 54 and Steve Mullard 43 in a stand of 109, rescuing SMCC from 77-4 after they were hard hit by some more indifferent umpiring. Jim Shirley passed 50 wickets for 2004 in taking 4 but dropped catches cost the home side as Grif sneaked to victory.
The Saturday 2nd XI comfortably beat their vociferous hosts, after declaring on 248-7 from 45 overs. Will Hemming hit 84 at the top of the order, supported well by Aman Singh (33) and Ansel Pottinger (52). Matt Read (4-35) knocked over the top of the order, before Waqas Ahmed (3-18) cleaned out the middle. Tufail Hussain and Aman Singh picked up the tail end to give SMCC a 120 run win.
The Saturday 3rd XI resumed their season after a week's absence with a 3 wicket win over Solihull. Adrian Maguire played a captain's innings leading his side with an unbeaten 29. 3 wickets also for Kamil Munir, and 4 shared between father and son double-act Sultan and Wasim Ramzan.
Sunday's double fixture against Weoley Hill saw more success, as the 1st XI passed the visitor's 134 with four wickets to spare - Jim Rasin hit 47, Martin Weir 25. More wickets for Jim Shirley (4-24) and two apiece for Rick Singh and Viz Parmar. The 2nd XI couldn't remove the Weoley Hill batsmen but allowed them only 130-6 in reply to their 203-9. Openers Will Hemming (47) and Alex Reynolds (44) lead the way, with support from skipper Steve Reynolds (33) and Dean Williams (28). Two wickets each for Steve Mullard and Ben Tarry.

1st XI back to winning ways
|
by WH
|
The Saturday 1st XI took 24 points at Streetly on Saturday despite missing front-line bowler Jim Shirley. With a team heavy on batsmen scoring runs was essential. On a difficult Streetly pitch Jack Hemming scored an invaluable century, whilst Andy Wier supported with a fine 55. Guy Morris, on his return, finished 34 not out as SMCC posted 259-7. In reply, Martyn Bucknall put any Streetly hopes out as he took 7 wickets in an unbroken spell of 19.3 overs. In support, Tom Hemming took two wickets and Keith Rondeau one as Streetly made just 116.
The Saturday 2nd XI lost a close-fought game at home by two wickets. Les King lead the batting with 53 whilst Steve Bose (25*) and Ben Tarry (23*) took the total up to 169-6 in the final overs. In reply, Streetly lost wickets regularly but kept the scoreboard ticking, whilst SMCC generally fielded poorly and dropped vital catches, allowing Streetly to sneak to a win with 8 balls to spare.
The Saturday 3rd XI game had to be conceded. WE NEED MORE PLAYERS ON A SATURDAY PLEASE!
The Sunday 1st XI hosted Berkswell in a game sponsored by the Bishop family. A minute's silence was observed in memory of the late Arthur, sadly missed by SMCC, and our thanks to Berkswell players for their part in this. The game saw SMCC bowled out for 191, extras top scoring with 47. Martin Weir hit 33, and Tom Hemming 28. In reply, Berkswell progressed to 86-2 before losing their last 8 wickets for just 41 runs, Ricky Singh taking 4-11 and two each for Tom Hemming, Pete Westwood and Viz Parmar.
The Sunday 2nd XI travelled to Dorridge where the first 11 overs saw them concede 77 runs. A good fightback saw Dorridge restricted to 203-8 from 45. Dan Marshall with 3-23 and Steve Reynolds with 2-33 were the pick of the bowlers. In reply, early wickets brought Reynolds and Les King together who kept SMCC in with a chance. When Les departed for 26 and then Steve for 52 it looked less likely. Ben Tarry (29*) and Dean Williams (25) kept hopes alive but SMCC settled for a losing draw on 169-7.

Three wins, but Saturday 1sts pipped at the post
|
by WH
|
The Saturday 1st XI lost a great game of cricket at Foliot Fields in the final over against Rugby. Having scored 210 from their 50 overs - Jack Hemming hitting 55, Nathan Mayling 38 - Rugby looked to be going well with opener Hurt and skipper Ewer at the crease. SMCC fought back with wickets from Jim Shirley and Nathan Mayling as Hurt departed for 47 and Ewer for 72. Further wickets piled on the pressure but good hitting from the Rugby lower order saw them home with 5 balls to spare.
The Saturday 2nd XI amassed 241-7 from their 50 overs thanks to a second century from Jim Rasin. In reply, Rugby got close but fell 10 runs short as Rasin completed a fine game, taking 5 wickets - the first time this double has been achieved by an SMCC player (we believe).
The Saturday 3rd XI were asked to bat by Old Edwardians and had scored 136-7 when rain stopped play. Will Hemming hit 71 and Talhar Masood 24.
Both Sunday teams achieved comfortable victories batting second. The 1st XI had only 87 to chase against Knowle Village, with Jack Hemming (41*) and Martin Weir (28*) taking SMCC to a ten wicket win. Viz Parmar took 5 wickets for 17 runs - a personal best. The 2nd XI hosted Alvechurch who posted 185, all out in the final over. Jim Rasin continued a good weekend with 3 wickets, 2 apiece for young bowlers Waqas Ahmed and Raja Singh. In reply, openers Guy Morris (68) and Will Hemming (88*) posted 126 in 25 overs, before Dean Williams (27*) joined Will to see SMCC to a 9 wicket win with 10 overs to spare.

A Mixed Weekend
|
by WH
|
For the first time in over a calendar year, the Saturday 1st XI lost a game. Visitors Pickwick scored 192 thanks largely to 64 from pro Butt. Jim Shirley took 5 wickets for the second time this season, whilst Tom Hemming took 3. In reply, only Martin Weir of the top six reached double figures, with and excellent 69. Keith Rondeau supported him well with 27 before being unluckily run out. Steve Mullard (16) and Tom Hemming (15) looked as though they might save the game until Butt broke through with the final ball of the game. A tough loss for SMCC, who it seemed came off worse with the days decisions, as well as a strong opposition professional.
The Saturday 2nd and 3rd XIs recorded wins (the first for the 3rd XI) with highlights being 112 from Jim Rasin, 47 from Alex Reynolds and 4 wickets for Steve Reynolds. Returning Will Hemming hit 43 for the 3rd XI as they beat Kenilworth. Tamal Masood, Sultan Ramzan and Will Hemming each took 3 wickets.
A double Sunday fixture against Bournville resulted in two losing draws. The 1st XI made 130-9 replying to Bournville's 239-9, Jim Shirley finishing a good personal weekend with 3 wickets, whilst Jack Hemming top-scored with 29. The 2nd XI found their target of 167 too much, and managed only 116-7 with skipper Steve Reynolds unbeaten on 33.

Martin Weir - MOM for WCL U19
|
by RJ
|
The league under 19 side had an excellent win over Staffordshire under 19's at Bronze on Wednesday. Staffordshire won the toss and decided to bat on the usual batsman's paradise at Bronze. Bassett who plays for Penn in the Birmingham League scored an excellent 100 retired as Staffordshire reached 243-3. For the league side, Andy Moore bowled well for his 1-23, Warwick Gardner showed promise with his left arm spin , D Cullen economic with his inswing 1.31 off 8 and man of the match Martin Weir again put the brake on 0-34 off 7 at the end of the innings.
Peter Burnell and Martin Weir opened our batting, Peter, particularly severe square of the wicket reached 34 in a stand of 71, before being dismissed. Captain Chris Booth then accompanied Weir in a stand of 150 to take us to the brink of victory. Booth was out for 73 at 221, but Weir carried on to 103 retired. A flurry of wickets followed but we reached the total off the 4th ball of the last over. A good afternoon's cricket for everyone.

Rain and Storms but a good week end for SMCC
|
by RJ
|
It's not often that SMCC 1st XI get the better side of the weather, but this week-end, where many games were abandoned, they got a welcome 20 points against a sporting Ward End Unity side. The reverse fixture was the only match to complete in the 2nd XI table - with 24 points resulting in a much improved placing for SMCC.
The 3rd XI game was not played due to the poor weather conditions.
Thunderstorms and lightning caused both Sunday fixtures to be rain interrupted - the 1st XI Skipper producing an unheard of 34 in the final over for the winning draw - see player of the week.
The 2nd XI were not so lucky over at Fillongley where they were just overhauled on run rate - but not before Matt Read clocked his 13th wicket for the week-end.

Both Sunday Teams Continue At Top
|
by KH
|
Sunday, 20th June, 2004 - Arden Sunday League.
Both First and Second Teams consolidated their respective starts to the season by disposing of the opposition after being asked to field.
The first team after suffering some early aggression from Corley, finally dismissed their opponents for 144 in 30.3 overs. Hands with 4 wickets and Shirley with 3 returned the best figures, but plaudits were given to both Tim Westwood and Tom Hemming for withstanding some outrageous hitting from the Corley top order. A superb piece of fielding from skipper Andy Wier saw his opposite number, Woollacott, run out when the home side had crashed 47 in just 8 overs. Sheldon Marlborough's response was spearheaded by Alex Reynolds who made 58 not out, ably assisted by Jack Hemming and Andy Wier both making 33.
The second team dismissed a weakened 9 man Marston Green side for just 86. Star of the visitors line-up was R.Moreton snr who contributed an outstanding 52 not out to the total. Matty Read showed his usual tenacity in taking 5 for 43 with young Raja Singh chipping in with a couple of wickets. In reply Sheldon Marlborough lost 4 wickets in a re-arranged batting order. A six from Anthony Maguire stunned all, before Dean Williams and Steve Mullard provided the inevitable win in the 25th over.

The first outright win of the season and a welcome 24 points takes the Saturday 1st XI up a few places in the table. The Saturday 2nd XI could not match the Camp Hill runs on the tricky track at Rumbush Lane.
Sunday saw a win for both SMCC teams - with the 1st XI beating top of the table Five Ways Old Eds and the 2nd XI getting a good win against Four Oaks Old Saints.

2 Centuries, 2 Halves & a Fiver
|
by RJ
|
The bank holiday week-end had some notable performances with centuries for Andy Wier, and also for Guy Morris in his season debut. Nat Mayling and Dave Mullard also made half centuries and Jim Shirley had an early innings break through the Fillongley batting with 5 wickets.
No outright wins this week-end but a credible losing draw for the 1st XI againt Walsall YPF at the Arboretum and a good winning draw at home against Fillongley. The 2nd XI could not match the batting of YPF at Foliott Fields, but had an enjoyable run chase against Fillongley on Bank Holiday Monday - which looked at first like a certainty with Guy Morris and Ansel Pottinger matching the home side's flamboyant use of a pitch that had a very short boundary. Sadly the batting ran out of steam and finished 36 runs short of the desired total.
