Winning Draw over Warwick
I couldn’t face writing anything about our defeat to Pickwick, so it’s nice to be able to report on an excellent winning draw against Warwick who have been going well this season.
Unfortunately we are still at the foot of the table, yet only 49 points separate top and bottom, so more of the same lads (I’m sure I’ve said this before…).
Back to the game. Keith Rondeau started and finished it, being caught and bowled to the first ball after we chose to bat, and restricting Warwick to just three runs of the final over when they needed eight. In between all that, Jack Hemming hit an excellent 72, Martin Weir looked good for 37 before getting an interesting decision, and Neal Rughani (31*) and Adam Coppell (19) rescued us from 143-6 to post 214-9.
I thought all our bowlers bowled well. Jim Shirley is still not 100% fit but looked at his best in 2007. Viz Parmar took early wickets and created chances, whilst both Nasir Munir and Martin Weir provided more seam options. Ronnie’s spell of 4-48 from 14 was one of his best. What’s more, despite some sloppy mistakes and a mini-collapse, we fought hard to finish on top, and the celebrations after the final ball showed what it meant to everybody playing. Well done lads.
[GEEK ALERT: Both ends of the attack (Shirley/Weir/Munir & Parmar/Rondeau) went for 101 from their 25 overs. 8 byes/leg byes made up the 210 Warwick scored. Interesting. Perhaps]
[BONUS LINK: The Warwick website report describes the game as ‘exciting’. I agree. Good bunch of lads, apart from the Barry Scott jokes.]
Next Saturday we go to Marston Green, our first WCL fixture there for a few seasons.
