Sun 1sts lose on the last ball at Weoley Hill
Still one result outstanding for the weekend, which was the Sunday 1st XI losing to Weoley Hill off the last ball of the game. From the reports I’ve heard, it was a fractious affair, and the home side’s umpiring left a lot to be desired. The SMCC scorer was particularly unimpressed - here’s hoping we can get a full report when he is back from holidays.

I had actually written a report for the game but some of the views I expressed toward the oppostion were very outspoken so I decided to leave it…
But I would love to know what the scorer made of it as he wasn’t very forthcoming with his thoughts after the game!

As far as I am aware, the Sunday League is a “Friendly” league, played to encourage links between local cricket clubs whilst engaging in a competitive but friendly game of cricket, and to provide a platform for juniors stepping up to senior level.
This game was not played with this in mind. Despicable unsportsmanship and unsavoury antics occurred throughout and what should have been a great game of cricket (all results still possible at the last ball of the game) merely left a nasty taste in the mouth and a feeling that the result was somewhat dubious.
Fair play to Weoley Hill for their win-at-all-costs attitude, but questions must be asked as to what place this has within a league that is supposed to breed good relations between clubs.
Conversations with the Legend have revealed that the Weoley Hill captain was so disgusted with his team at the tea break, he sat about 20 foot away from his team and cast filthy looks at them - I would hope his reaction at the end of the game would be to do more than just this and try and instill some better gamesmanship into his players for the future.
