Monumental effort just falls short

Fillongley has always been a ‘bogey’ ground for SMCC in the Saturday league. Last year we took a good hiding there as the hosts rattled up 300+ and we collapsed to not many all out. We got off to a good start this year in winning the toss and choosing to bat on a warm day with a good looking pitch. The pitch turned out to be slow with some uneven bounce, but we should have done better than 160 all out particularly after a good start, and good innings from Guy Morris and Martin Weir - who were both unlucky to be out as they might have started to accelerate.

However, we knew we could make things tough for the home side and we did. Viz Parmar bowled the best spell of his life, removing the top 5 and finishing with 7-70 from 19 overs, every wicket deserved as he swung the ball throughout - and even removed a stump from the ground! Tim Westwood bowled a lively 6 over spell, Martin Weir and Keith Rondeau leant good support. Jim Shirls has had a wicketless start but not through lack of trying - it’s only a matter of time before he starts knocking them over.

Some sloppy fielding and a few too many extras cost us, and ultimately we didn’t have enough runs on the board as Fillongley got home with one wicket to spare, thanks largely to a Webster (who also took 5 wickets). So close, yet so far. No shame for this young SMCC side though - Fillongley may have labelled us “Brainless Brummies” but we gave them a good fight and on another day we would have taken 24 points.

The league table is not great reading after that result, but as ever teams are closely packed and a couple of wins would see us move upwards quickly. Bablake Old Boys are still 100% and top the league, and will take some stopping - having beaten this week’s opponents Wishaw on Saturday.

Now we need to keep up the spirit we showed on Saturday, and work on tightening up our game. The batsmen need to come into form, slightly more sharpness in the field and we will be well on the way.
